Founded in 1985, AANMA’s core areas of expertise are education, advocacy, and outreach. AANMA’s flagship publications, “Allergy & Asthma Today” magazine and “The MA Report” newsletter and website are consumer lifelines to medical news and healthy living.

Alzheimers Aid Society of Northern California

Alzheimer’s Aid Society of Northern California provides families with education, support, guidance, and referral services. The Society promotes education to the general public and the professional community and conducts in-services to skilled nursing, residential facilities, and law enforcement. The Society also contributes to research seeking the cause, possible prevention, treatment and cure of Alzheimers disease. The Society works to educate legislators about Alzheimers disease, as well as support California legislation in the areas of increased funding for research, long-term insurance for patients, and respite for caregivers. A 52-page booklet entitled, “A Practical Guide for Alzheimer Caregivers” is made available to all families and caregivers who call. Additionally, scholarships are awarded to college students studying the field of gerontology.

The Society also features support groups whereby individuals receive support and fellowship from others experiencing similar feelings and emotions. The group is designed to provide support as well as information on research, therapy and other topics of interest. Weekly support groups for both the caregiver and the patient are held at Oasis of Stockton, 1119 Rosemarie Lane. Monthly support group meetings for caregivers are held at Somerford Place, 3530 Deer Park Drive in Stockton. There are also groups in Sacramento, Tracy, and Turlock.

Alzheimers Association - Greater Sacramento Office

Alzheimers Association - Greater Sacramento Offices mission is to eliminate Alzheimers through the advancement of research, to provide enhanced care and support to all affected, and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

The office serves eight counties in the Greater Sacramento area, including San Joaquin. Over 60,000 people in the region have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia and over 180,000 caregivers provide support.

The free local programs and services include a 24-hour per day, 7 days per week helpline, care consultations for families, and over 20 support groups. Caregiver education forums and community education classes related to dementia and brain health are also offered.

American Cancer Society

American Cancer Society provides support to cancer patients and their families at no direct cost to patients or the people who care for them. This includes transportation to medical appointments, transportation reimbursement, lodging, support groups and wigs.

American Cancer Society also provides information on all types of cancer and prevention education. A live chat line is available.

Cancer Support Groups hosts two cancer support groups:

  • "Reach to Recovery" puts women with breast cancer into contact with other breast cancer survivors.
  • "Road to Recovery" coordinates a ride with an American Cancer Society volunteer driver. Coordinate a ride with a local organization to provide transportation, or refer you to a local resource that can help.

American Childhood Cancer Organization (ACCO) is the nation’s oldest and largest grassroots non-profit dedicated to childhood cancer. ACCO is dedicated to making childhood cancer a national health priority through shaping policy, supporting research, raising awareness, and providing educational resources and innovative programs to children with cancer, survivors, and their families.

ACCO leads the nation in raising state-level childhood cancer research appropriations by raising awareness and offering free educational resources to children with cancer, survivors, and their families.

Childhood cancer remains the number one cause of death by disease in the U.S. and around the world, and the American Childhood Cancer Organization is recognized nationally and internationally for making cancer a child health priority.

American Council of the Blind

  • Family members, friends, doctors, and others who care for, work with, and are trying to assist a blind or visually impaired person.

American Council of the Blind (ACB) is a national organization of blind, visually impaired, and sighted individuals whose purpose is to work toward independence, security, equality of opportunity, and improved quality of life for all blind and visually impaired people. ACB programs and services include:

  • "ACB Braille Forum," a bimonthly publication available in braille, large print, on NLS-style cartridge (audio), by email subscription, podcast, and at www.acb.org. It also plays on ACB Media Networks Channel 10. The magazine is free to members; all others pay $25 per format per year.
  • A number of college scholarships (must be legally blind in both eyes). The application goes live on acb.org on November 1, and must be returned by the deadline.
  • An annual conference featuring a large trade show of the latest high- and low-tech gadgets for blind and visually impaired individuals, as well as a wide variety of breakout sessions, seminars, workshops, technology training classes, and more. Volunteer opportunities are available; contact the national office for details.
  • An internet radio station, ACB Media Network (https://acbmedia.org/), with a variety of streams. ACB Radio Café features music by blind musicians. Mainstream features include content from the International Association of Audio Information Services as well as a variety of talk shows. Treasure Trove offers such old-time radio shows as The Jack Benny Show, Gunsmoke, Red Skelton, Fibber McGee and Molly, Gene Autry, and many others. The ACB Community channel offers both live and pre-recorded content from ACB-sponsored community events.

Its mission is to prevent and cure diabetes to help improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. The association is one of the worlds largest voluntary health organizations with about 2,200 community organizations in all states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. More than 3.7 million people volunteer with the American Heart Association to fight cardiovascular diseases, the nations number one killer and a leading cause of disability. Preventing heart disease and stroke is the first priority of the American Heart Association. American Lung Association in California works to prevent lung disease and promote lung health through education, community service, advocacy and research. Lung disease, including asthma, emphysema and lung cancer, is the third leading cause of death in America.

Please call the American Lung Association for answers to questions about asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (C.O.P.D.), emphysema, tuberculosis and other lung diseases as well as questions about the health effects of air pollution, the harmful effects of tobacco, the prevalence of youth smoking and other concerns related to lung health. CDA Foundation (CDA Cares)

CDA Cares is to improve the oral health of all Californians by supporting the dental profession in its efforts to meet community needs. Oral health is critical to the total health and well-being of an individual. For young children, it means they won’t live with pain or miss school. For adults, it can enhance employment outcomes, improve their overall health and quality of life and, for many, restore dignity.

CDA Cares facilitates events and grant opportunities to community-based organizations and individuals who reduce barriers to care in underserved populations. The dental profession and its philanthropic values is represented as it generously gives back to help meet the needs of Californians. Lao Family Community Empowerment (LFCE) assists refugees and immigrants with developing skills needed to become self-supportive.

LFCE is also affiliated and involved with People and Congregations Together (PACT) and Pacific Institute for Organizing (PICO) to promote, motivate and organize the Hmong and Laotian community in developing leadership, organization and advocacy skills through one-on-one appointments and community action meetings.

LFCE offers:

  • The Home Visitation Project - a collaborative effort among Lao Family, UC Davis Cooperative Extension Program, SUSD schools and LUSD schools. The program offers home-based health and nutrition education, a Raising a Reader family literacy program, parent workshops, and health screening for children and to parents or guardians of children ages 0 to 5 years living within the designated zip codes.
  • Mental Health Programs - Southeast Asian Recovery Services (SEARS) provides case management to mental health consumers and also conducts outreach and engagement to the Southeast Asian communities.
  • Senior Program - This program creates opportunities for Hmong and other Southeast Asian seniors to socialize and participate in fun activities together. The center is open two days per week - every Thursday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

National Alliance on Mental Illness of San Joaquin County

National Alliance on Mental Illness of San Joaquin County (NAMI SJC) provides personal and mutual support for families and individuals living with a mental illness, including information and referral services. It assists families and individuals with coping and survival skills.

NAMI currently offers:

  • The Family-to-Family class is an eight-week course for families and friends of someone living with mental illness. The course covers mental illness, medication, coping skills, and family emotional support. This course is also available in Spanish. At this time, it is being offered virtually. Please see website for upcoming classes.
  • Peer-to-Peer class is an eight-week education course for consumers of mental health in the community. In addition, IOOV “In Our Own Voice” presentations are available for any group wishing to hear from two individuals who are in recovery from mental illness. This course is also available in Spanish.
  • The NAMI Provider Education Program offers 12-1/2 hours of in-service training, taught by a trained five-member team of family members, individuals living with mental illness, and a mental health professional.
  • The NAMI Basics is a six-week, peer-directed education program developed specifically for parents and other family caregivers of children and adolescents who have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness/serious emotional disturbance or who are experiencing symptoms but have not yet been diagnosed.
  • The NAMI Connection Recovery Support Groups meet for 90 minutes and is open to all adults with mental health challenges, with or without a diagnosis. Normally meet in person in Stockton, Lodi, Manteca and Tracy. Currently, on-site, hybrid, and virtual meetings are offered. See website for details. National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS)

National Coalition for Cancer Survivorships (NCCS) mission is to advocate for quality cancer care for all people touched by cancer. Founded by and for cancer survivors, NCCS created the widely accepted definition of survivorship and defines someone as a cancer survivor from the time of diagnosis and for the balance of life. The NCCS has worked with legislators and policy makers to represent cancer patients and survivors in efforts to improve quality of care and quality of life after diagnosis. The unique niche in the cancer advocacy landscape is promoting policy change to ensure quality cancer care. The vision is to be an advocacy organization that reflects the needs of all cancer survivors to effect policy change at the national level.

Believing that access to credible and accurate patient information is fundamental to understanding and receiving quality cancer care, NCCS offers free publications and resources that empower individuals to become strong advocates for their own care or the care of others. Patients empowered with information and tools can receive optimal care by making their needs known to their doctors, care teams, health plans, and elected officials.

To help meet the challenges faced by survivors, NCCS:

National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA)

National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) supports individuals and families affected by eating disorders and serves as a catalyst for prevention, cures, and access to quality care. The following is a listing of activities and programs:

NEDA supports Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW) held during the last week of February each year. There are over 350 EDAW coordinators, teachers, social workers, eating disorder professionals and college teams who distribute educational materials and organize awareness and prevention events on high school and college campuses, in hospitals and community centers in all 50 states.

The Grace Holland Cozine Resource Center provides critical information for individuals and loved ones to support their healing journeys. National Kidney Foundation of Northern California

National Kidney Foundation of Northern California provides literature on kidney and urology diseases and organ donation. Free kidney health screenings are also provided in various communities. The foundation serves the Northern California, Oregon, and Washington area.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society

Eligibility:

Persons with multiple sclerosis and/or their families, health care professionals, employers, and the community at large.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society publishes a quarterly magazine, “MS Connection.” The publication includes lists of self-help group meetings in San Joaquin County. This society loans informational videos, books and audio tapes. Information in Spanish is also available.

Optimal Hospice Inc. (Bristol Hospice - Stockton)

Bristol Hospice-Stockton works together with patients and their families to enhance quality of life. Hospice services are available for those typically affected by any type of life-limiting condition. By utilizing the most modern pain and symptom management techniques combined with a compassionate support system, hospice services help to reduce the overwhelming stress and anxiety that can come with caring for a loved one with a life-limiting illness at home or in a residency facility.

Hospice Care Team: When the focus of medical care changes from cure to comfort, the Hospice Care team provides physical, emotional, practical, and spiritual support for the entire family. Hospice provides home visits by nursing staff, medical social services, therapy services, physician services, hospice aide, and volunteer services.

Bereavement/Spiritual Counseling: Hospice also includes individual or group counseling. The professional team can provide individual counseling as well as offer regularly scheduled community groups. Hospice has developed the "Kids Grief Connection" for children experiencing the loss of a friend or a loved one, including a family member. All services are provided to the community free of charge.

Planned Parenthood Mar Monte provides confidential and low-cost services. Medi-Cal welcome. Day, evening and Saturday hours are offered.

Family Planning information and education, medical services including pregnancy testing, birth control exams, routine medical exams, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, abortion services, AIDS testing and counseling, breast and testicular exams, and prenatal care are provided.

Educational presentations are offered to the community. These topics include decision making and goal setting, anatomy, birth control, sexually transmitted diseases, healthy relationships, anger management, and womens health.

Postpartum Support International (PSI) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote awareness, prevention and treatment of mental health issues related to childbearing in every country worldwide.

It is the vision of PSI that every woman and family worldwide will have access to information, social support, and informed professional care to deal with mental health issues related to childbearing. The PSI promotes this vision through advocacy and collaboration, and by educating and training the professional community and the public.

Pregnancy Connections Clinic

Any pregnant patient with at least one or more of the following:

  • Unstable housing or homelessness
  • Active or prior history of syphilis
  • Substance use disorder

Pregnancy Connections Clinic is an open-access prenatal clinic serving pregnant people who are unhoused, using substances, and/or have been diagnosed with syphilis. This clinic is housed within the Family Medicine department at San Joaquin County clinic in French Camp. Funded by the CDC, Pregnancy Connections offers:

  • Patient-center prenatal care
  • Delivery services
  • Ultrasound exams
  • Medication for opioid use disorder
  • Drop-in hours
  • Transportation support
  • Resource referrals such as housing, parenting resources, narcotics or alcoholics anonymous
  • Postpartum care including exams and birth control

The clinic physicians are supported by a dedicated case manager, medical assistant, and in collaboration with San Joaquin Public Health. All care provide is confidential and respectful.

Pregnancy Help Center of Manteca

Pregnant individuals or parents of young children with one form of the following identification: California Drivers License, School Identification Card, Immigration Card or California Identification Card.

Pregnancy Help Center of Manteca offers free counseling, pregnancy testing, parenting classes, post-abortion counseling, referrals to other agencies, maternity and infant clothing, baby equipment, diapers, and formula to pregnant women who are in need. Services are available until infant reaches 12 months of age. Parenting classes are available, "Earn-While-You-Learn." In addition, mentoring and counseling services for young men are offered.

Rite of Passage California Foster Families

Rite of Passage California Foster Families is a private non-profit foster family agency licensed by the State of California to recruit, train and provide extensive services to foster/resource family homes. The goal is provide safe, ethical and loving homes for foster youth ages infant to 17 years. 24-hours per day, 7 days per week emergency support along with weekly home visits by a social worker with a masters degree are provided. In-home training for families is offered and reimbursement is given to all homes with children.

Sutter Tracy Community Hospital (Childbirth Education Classes)

Expectant parents; pre-registration is required. Currently only offered for those delivering at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital.

Childbirth Education Classes draw upon a variety of techniques. Childbirth instructor prepares expectant mothers and their partners for birth. The class includes instruction in relaxation and breathing to reduce the discomfort of labor, the partners role, what to expect upon admission to the department, possible medical procedures, medicated and non-medicated labor and anesthesia, postpartum and newborn care.

Tours of the Obstetric department are not yet being offered at this time.

The Organizing & Leadership Academy (TOLA) is a rigorous “hands-on” training program for individuals interested and motivated to pursue a career in organizing. The TOLA program is demanding and effective.

TOLA Fellows participate in classroom instruction, do significant reading and reflective writing, and are challenged by experienced organizers, community leaders and elected officials. Most importantly, fellows work on real projects to develop the discipline and skills necessary to become effective organizers.

University of California Cooperative Extension of San Joaquin County (CalFresh Healthy Living, UC Program )

CalFresh Healthy Living, UC Program offers workshops at local agencies serving low-income families and individuals in San Joaquin County. The workshops promote healthy eating, physical activity, food resource management skills and safe food handling. The following is a list of their programs:

  • Youth program offers San Joaquin County children research-based nutrition and physical activity focused curicula. The information helps them make consistent, healthful choices in their daily lives. Audience: children, birth to 18 years of age enrolled in programs where there is 50% or more enrollment in free and reduced price lunch program or living in census tracts where 50% or more of the residents are below 185% of the Federal Poverty Level
  • Adult program is focused on improving the nutrition-related skills, specifically those skills related to selecting, purchasing and preparing a low-cost nutritional diet for themselves and their families
