• Age: Primarily open to high‑school–age students, with exceptional 7th or 8th graders encouraged to apply
• Instrument: Orchestral instruments only (strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion)
• Audition: Audition required; students must submit a recorded solo and scales appropriate to the instrument
• Private Lessons: Members are expected to take regular private lessons; limited scholarships for lessons may be available
• Tuition: Annual tuition applies, with need‑based financial assistance available on a case‑by‑case basis

Stockton Youth Symphony (SYS) is a community-based orchestral program that provides young musicians in the Stockton and greater San Joaquin County area with the opportunity to perform high‑level symphonic repertoire in a full orchestra setting. Established in 1965, the program emphasizes musical excellence, teamwork, and personal growth through weekly rehearsals, sectional coaching, and multiple public concerts each season. SYS serves as a bridge between school music programs and collegiate or professional orchestral experiences, helping students develop advanced performance skills and discipline while fostering a lifelong appreciation for classical music.
